Steve McQueen
In 1955 Steve McQueen Performed at the Playhouse!
One of Hollywood's favorite cool guys, Steve McQueen, appeared at the Ogunquit Playhouse in 1955, when John Lane produced the world premier of Two Fingers of Pride, by Vincent J. Longhi. However, McQueen was not presented as the star. In fact, he only appeared in a minor role. A few years later, in 1963, his breakout role came when he portrayed Captain Virgil Hilts in the hit film "The Great Escape." From that point forward, the former budding young actor at the Ogunquit Playhouse became known as "King of Cool."
Steve McQueen starred in twenty-five films including "The Cincinnati Kid" and "Papillon" with Dustin Hoffman. His slick demeanor and cool attitude became an iconic standard and was emulated by many of his fans. McQueen's passion for motorcycles and fast cars also earned him the title of most iconic biker of all time in February of 2007. His career earned him an Oscar nomination for "The Sand Pebbles" in 1967. McQueen's posters hung on the walls of admirers in his prime, and fame has even exceeded the legendary icon's death by 30 years. Steve McQueen died from cancer in 1980.
