Escaping the doldrums of her country life, Millie Dillmount heads off to New York City to pursue a thoroughly modern new life! Tearing up her return ticket and cutting her hair, she soon realizes that life on busy city streets is not all that she envisioned. Seeking an eligible bachelor to sweep her off her feet, Millie’s search for fortune lands her at the Hotel Priscilla for single women. Without money to afford her room, Millie encounters the sinister proprietress, Mrs. Meers. Soon after, girls in surrounding rooms mysteriously begin to disappear. Millie’s temporary misfortunes begin to fall away as she gets a job as a stenographer and finds herself in glitzy speakeasies. Still pursuing her dream of a wealthy husband, she soon comes to understand that love is something far too important to throw away for money.
