Music & Lyrics
was born in Brooklyn, New York on 26 Sept 1898 and began his musical training at 13. By 15 he had left high school to work as a Tin Pan Alley song plugger, and within three years had his first song published. Although When You Want ‘Em You Can’t Get ‘Em, When You’ve Got ‘Em You Don’t Want ‘Em created little interest, George’s Swanee, popularized by Al Jolson, brought Gershwin his first real fame. In 1924, when George teamed up with his older brother Ira, the Gershwins became dominant Broadway songwriters, creating brisk, infectious rhythm numbers and affectingly poignant ballads, invariably fashioning the words to fit the melodies with a glove-like fidelity. This extraordinary collaboration led to a succession of musical comedies, including Lady, Be Good; Oh, Kay; Funny Face; Strike Up the Band; Girl Crazy; and Of Thee I Sing (the first musical comedy to win a Pulitzer Prize). Over the years, Gershwin songs have also been used in numerous films including Shall We Dance, A Damsel in Distress, and An American in Paris. In later years, his songs were used in award-winning stage musicals like My One and Only and Crazy for You which ran four years on Broadway. Today, Gershwin’s music is performed more frequently than it was during his brief lifetime. Certainly the Trustees of Columbia University must have recognized this when they awarded George Gershwin a special posthumous Pulitzer Prize in 1998, on the centennial of his birth.

was born in New York City on 6 Dec 1896. While attending the College of the City of New York, Ira began demonstrating his lifelong interest in light verse by contributing to newspaper columnists. In 1918, while working as the desk attendant in a Turkish bath, he began a brief collaboration with his brother George. Not wanting to trade on the success of his already famous brother, Ira soon adopted the nom de plume of Arthur Francis, combining the names of his youngest brother Arthur and sister Frances. In 1921, Ira supplied lyrics for his first Broadway show, Two Little Girls in Blue, with music by another newcomer, Vincent Youmans. After writing songs for three more years with a variety of composers, Ira dropped the pseudonym and began his lifelong collaboration with George, creating more than twenty scores for stage and screen, and in 1932, he was the first lyricist to be awarded a Pulitzer Prize for Of Thee I Sing. Following George’s death, Ira went on to collaborate with such composers as Harold Arlen, Vernon Duke, Kurt Weill, Jerome Kern, Harry Warren, Arthur Schwartz, and Burton Lane. For his achievements in film scores, Ira was nominated for three Academy Awards. In 1985, the US Congress recognized this legacy by awarding the Congressional Gold Medal to George and Ira Gershwin, only the third time in our nation’s history that songwriters had been so honored. Small wonder that the Gershwin oeuvre has been taken up enthusiastically by a younger generation who have delighted in the new Gershwin musicals, My One and Only and Crazy for You.

is an internationally-acclaimed playwright whose work has been performed in more than 30 countries in over 20 languages. With six shows on Broadway and six in the West End, he has garnered two Laurence Olivier Awards, two Helen Hayes Awards, the Edgar Award, the SETC Distinguished Career Award, and the Edwin Forrest Award for Services to the Theatre. His plays have been commissioned by the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Bristol Old Vic. His first Broadway play, Lend Me A Tenor, which the New York Times called “one of the two great farces by a living writer,” won three Tony Awards and was nominated for nine. His other best-known Broadway and West End shows include Crazy For You (5 years on Broadway, Tony and Olivier Award Winner for Best Musical), Moon Over Buffalo, Leading Ladies, Twentieth Century, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, The Game’s Afoot, The Fox on the Fairway, Midsummer/Jersey, The Three Musketeers, Treasure Island, and The Beaux’ Stratagem. Ken’s plays have starred Alec Baldwin, Carol Burnett, Lynn Redgrave, Mickey Rooney, Hal Holbrook, Dixie Carter, Tony Shalhoub, Anne Heche, Joan Collins, and Kristin Bell. His book How To Teach Your Children Shakespeare was published in June 2013 by Random House, and his work has been published by the Yale Review. He is a McCarter Theatre/Sallie B. He had the honor of being Hugh Jackman’s standby in the record-breaking revival of The Music Man, receiving rave reviews for his performance as Harold Hill opposite Sutton Foster. is a two-time Emmy and Golden Globe Award winner for her performance in the groundbreaking TV series All in the Family. She starred in CBS’ spinoff Gloria and 9 to 5 (FOX), and playing recurring roles on Still Standing (CBS), as well as Gilmore Girls (The CW) and Netflix’s four movie revival, and guest starred in Maron (IFC). Sally’s television movies include: A Gun in the House, And Your Name is Jonah, The Great Houdinis, Hey… I’m Alive, In The Best Interest of the Children, Deadly Silence, My Husband is Missing, and Intimate Strangers. Sally co-starred in two legendary motion pictures: Five Easy Pieces with Jack Nicholson, and The Getaway with Steve McQueen and Ali McGraw. Sally’s first two Broadway shows were Wally’s Cafe with Rita Moreno and James Coco, and Neil Simon’s female version of The Odd Couple with Brenda Vaccaro. For three years she starred as Miss Mamie Lynch on Broadway and on tour in Tommy Tune’s production of Grease, and in the 20th Anniversary Tour of Annie co-starred as Miss Hannigan. Sally was named Best Actress by the Los Angeles Artistic Director Theatre Awards for her role as Louise Seger in the musical, Always, Patsy Cline; won the Ovation Award as Best Featured Actress in a Musical for her performance as Agnes Gooch in the LA production of Mame, a second Ovation Award for Cinderella, and also won a plaque for ‘Best Actress’ in her 7th Grade Class Play.
